The J-1 visa is a non-immigrant visa designed for individuals approved to participate in U.S.-based exchange visitor programs focused on education, training, and cultural exchange.
This visa supports a wide range of categories including:
Students and scholars
Interns and trainees
Professors and teachers

Au pairs
Other professionals entering the U.S. for structured learning or cultural exchange
Eligibility & Requirements:
A completed bachelor’s degree or equivalent, plus relevant work experience• A valid program sponsorship from a U.S.-based and SEVP-accredited organization or employer
Proof of English language proficiency and financial support• Intent to return to your home country upon program completion (unless visa status changes)
Duration of Stay:
Generally up to 18 months, depending on program type• Certain categories (e.g., professors, researchers) may have different durations
Note: Some J-1 visa holders may be subject to the Two-Year Home Residency Requirement, which requires returning to their home country for two years before applying for certain U.S. visas or permanent residency—unless a waiver is obtained.
