The F-1 visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows foreign nationals to enter the United States for full-time academic study at institutions approved by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). Eligible institutions include:
Colleges and universities
Seminaries and conservatories
Academic high schools and elementary schools
Other accredited academic institutions
Eligibility & Requirements:
Admission to a SEVP-approved school
Proof of academic qualifications (e.g., high school diploma, bachelor’s degree, or equivalent)
Sufficient financial support for tuition and living expenses
Strong intent to return to your home country after your studies
Academic Opportunities with F-1 Status:
Curricular Practical Training (CPT):
Pre-Graduation work authorization for internships or training directly related to your major
Must be approved by your Designated School Official (DSO) before starting
Steps:
Secure a relevant job or internship offer
Notify your DSO
Receive CPT authorization
Begin training/employment
Optional Practical Training (OPT):
Temporary employment related to your field of study
Duration: Up to 12 months (combined Pre-OPT and Post-OPT)
Steps:
Apply to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
Wait for Employment Authorization Document (EAD)
Begin employment upon EAD approval
STEM OPT Extension:
Available for F-1 students in approved STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields
Extension: Additional 24 months beyond standard OPT
Total possible OPT duration: 36 months for eligible STEM students
