H-1B Visa: Specialty Occupation

The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows U.S. employers to temporarily hire highly skilled foreign professionals in specialty occupations—positions that typically require specialized knowledge and at least a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent work experience). Common fields include:


  • Information Technology

  • Engineering

  • Finance

  • Healthcare

  • Education

  • Architecture and more


Eligibility & Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field (or equivalent combination of education and experience)

  • A valid job offer from a U.S. employer for a specialty occupation• Employer must file an H-1B petition with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)


Duration of Stay:

  • Initial validity: Up to 3 years

  • Extension possible for an additional 3 years, with a maximum of 6 years in most cases

  • In some situations, extensions beyond 6 years may be granted if a green card process is in progress
