The Trump administration is ending a Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for Venezuelans, affecting approximately 350,000 migrants who will lose work permits and deportation protections this spring. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem cited concerns about community impact and security. Venezuelans under an earlier 2021 designation will retain protections until September.

After reviewing country conditions and consulting with the appropriate U.S. government agencies, Noem determined that conditions in Venezuela no longer support the 2023 TPS designation. As a result, TPS and related benefits associated with the 2023 designation will no longer be in effect starting 60 days after publication of the Federal Register notice.

The decision is part of a broader review of immigration policies, with some lawmakers advocating continued protections for Venezuelans due to ongoing conditions in their home country.
